Reach Unlimited opens 17th group home
published Apr. 30, 2012
The nonprofit support services agency Reach Unlimited recently opened its 17th group home, located in Stone Gate.
"The soft housing market has made the purchase of this home an affordable solution," said Kathi Schmidt, executive director of Reach Unlimited. "The monthly mortgage payment is less than the rents we pay for other group homes leased by the agency."
The agency began as two group homes and a handful of clients in 2005, built from the ground up with $2.2 million in donations. The center provides learning opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities through life skills, functional academics, art, music, fitness, vocational training and more.
Reach Unlimited provides a job for every client who wants to work, offering positions in everything from area businesses to art glass gift items.
"Over 3 percent of the population has IDD. More space is needed to expand our programs for more clients," said Schmidt. "Once funding is secured, construction on Phase Two of the Learning Activity Center will add 40,000 square feet to the center. This will include an additional 10 classrooms, a large multipurpose room for recreational activities, a commercial kitchen and dining area, and space for our administrative offices. A comprehensive indoor/outdoor recreation center and retirement home are also part of our long-range plan. With continued community support, we know this, too, will become a reality."
