Houston Family Arts Center performers earn gold at national competition
published Aug. 8, 2012
The Houston Family Arts Centers Performance Team and individuals won several awards at the Starbound National Competition in San Antonio.
The Performance Team was able to grab two Elite Gold Awards at the competition, as well as five Gold Awards in four separate categories.
The trio of Hope Harris, Taylor Hall and Ashlynn Maddox snagged an Elite Gold Award in musical theatre for their rendition of "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now," also earning the Broadway Bound Judges Award. Jesse Brownie and Jacob Majors also walked away with Elite Gold for the duet "Sing, Sing, Sing."
The team also won gold in the tap category for its performance of "Walk This Way" and its musical theatre performance of "Showstoppers Medley." Taylor Halls won gold for his solo performance of "Freak on a Leash," and the duet of Hope Harris and Jean Furters won for "Shake It Out" in contemporary categories. The duet of Maddie Dennison and Raegan Roberts won gold in the jazz category.
"We are thrilled to have our Academy students recognized nationally," said Linda Jacobs, managing director of HFAC's Actors Academy, in a press release. "All of our students are triple-threat competitors — they act, sing and dance."
"We started the Performance Team to give them an opportunity to compete with the top performers in the nation, and in the first year of competition they have won both regional and national awards," she said in the release.
