Cy-Fair area school celebrates excellence in science
published Dec. 20, 2010
Harmony School of Excellence held its annual school-wide science fair on Dec. 11.
Four hundred and seventy-five students presented their projects, which they began in September, when students from fourth through eighth grades initiated their research. Over the course of 14 weeks, students completed their individual experiments, composed research papers and compiled scientific method information onto display boards to be presented to their classes and the judges.
Project categories included biology, chemistry, engineering and environmental science. Student projects ranged from determining the best type of composting to instructions on how to create a homemade air conditioner. The winners of the campus-level competition advanced to the city-level competition
There were 60 judges at the science fair, who came from a number of organizations that include Devon Energy, M.D. Anderson and Conoco Phillips. Among the guests were State Rep. Gary Elkins and representatives from the office of Sen. Dan Patrick.
The Harmony School has hosted an annual science fair for all students in fourth through eighth grades since it opened five years ago. The school is part of the Harmony School System, a network of charter schools, which has 33 schools in Texas. All Harmony Schools put emphasis on science and math.
Houston’s Harmony School is located at 7340 N. Gessner Road.
