Cy-Fair ISD livestock show approaches
published Jan. 27, 2011
After months of hard work with their animals, FFA students will share the fruits of their labor in February at the Cypress-Fairbanks Livestock Show and Sale.
About 820 FFA students representing 10 Cy-Fair high schools are expected to bring their projects to this year's event, set for Feb. 3-5 at the CFISD Exhibit Center, 11206 Telge Road.
Admission is free.
The show schedule begins with livestock judging Thursday, Feb. 3, including the rabbit show at 8 a.m., poultry at 11 a.m., lambs at 1 p.m. and steers and heifers at 3 p.m.
Judging will continue Feb. 4 with the swine show at 8 a.m. and the goat show at 1 p.m. Swine tends to be the largest category at the show.
Saturday, Feb. 5, will feature an 11:30 a.m. buyers' luncheon at Arnold Middle School, 11111 Telge, across the street from the exhibit center.
The premium auction begins at 1 p.m.
Typically, about 40 percent of the students' animals are purchased during the auction, said David Reynolds, career and technical education coordinator for Cy-Fair ISD.
The others go to the freezer sale, where they're sold for a pre-determined price. The freezer sale allows students to break even on their investments.
