Spring non-profit sends food donations into space at Willowbrook Mall

published Mar. 1, 2011

Visitors to Willowbrook Mall this weekend witnessed sci-fi-themed sculptures made of food donations gathered for Spring-based charity Northwest Assistance Ministries' food pantry.

NAM's annual Art for the Hungry event this year tackled an "Out of this World" theme. Seven builders used cans and boxes of food items to create a replica of a Galaga
game, and fashioned an iron lung into a rocket for a display of food donated by Rotary Club of Willowbrook, referencing the Rotary Club's long-running fight against polio. For another display, they crafted friendly little aliens out of vegetable cans and applesauce cups.

"Probably the most unusual item used were the individual tea bags used in 'The Death Star," says NAM's Maria Magee. "The groups spend weeks collecting the 1,000 food items required to participate, and then they spend 2 to 3 hours actually setting up their sculpture."

The sculptures will be on display at the mall until March 13.

Magee says the food donations for the sculptures came from Klein United Methodist Church Girls Youth Group; Cypress Ranch High School; Klein High School National Art Honor Society; Klein United Methodist Church Boys Youth Group; Church of Champions Lifeline Youth Group; Rotary of Willowbrook; Cypress Creek Interact; and Houston NW Sunrise.

"The groups spend weeks collecting the 1,000 food items required to participate, and then they spend 2-3 hours actually setting up their sculpture," Magee says.
