If the regular season means anything, the Cy Falls Golden Eagles should be one of the favorites to win the Region II-5A soccer championship.
The Golden Eagles, who are ranked No. 7 in Region II-5A by the NFCAA poll, compiled a 16-0-3 overall and 10-0-3 District 15-5A record during the 2010 regular season.
It is the first time Cy Falls will enter the playoffs with an undefeated record.
We play in a very tough district,'' said long-time head coach Kevin Napier. Any time you can pull it (going undefeated) off, it is a good feeling. I am very proud of the guys.''
The Golden Eagles are scheduled to meet Vista Ridge in the first round of the Region II-5A playoffs at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
A year ago, Cy Falls advanced to the Region II-5A quarterfinals before losing to The Woodlands.
The playoffs are going to be a tough road,'' admitted Napier. But the kids have a lot of confidence in each other. Being there last year, and going three rounds deep, will help.''
Cy Falls entered last year's playoffs as the No. 4 seed out of District 15-5A, then upset Georgetown in the first round of the playoffs.
Not to be clich, but we know we can't worry about (game) No. 2 before we take care of (game) No. 1,'' Napier said. But we have had some tough situations this year. We have faced adversity. We have been down in games early and were able to bounce back. The kids have handled their business very well.''
The league's other three playoff teams are Langham Creek, Cy-Fair and Cy Woods.
Cy Falls tied Langham Creek, Cy Woods and Cy Lakes during the regular season. It had to rally from a 3-1 deficit to tie Cy Lakes.
We made a couple mistakes early that really put us in a hole,'' Napier said. But the kids never lost their confidence. They were able to rally and tie it up.''
Napier said The Woodlands should be the team to beat in Region II.
They are definitely the team to beat,'' he emphatically said. Klein and Klein Oak also are going to be extremely tough outs. Then, you have Georgetown and schools from the Austin area. There is plenty of competition in this region, that is for sure.''
Cy Falls upset Klein in the second round of the playoffs a year ago.
"That was huge," Napier said. "I'm sure they remember that. But we aren't going to worry about that now. We have other business to take care of."
Brian Vasquez and Ricky Mupier lead the team in goals and assists.
Napier also lauded the goalkeeping of Kevin Suarez.
I would say Kevin is one of the best goalies in the district, if not the Houston area,'' Napier said. It is nice to know he is back there in the net.''
