Houston Pokemon players gear up for tournament
From a press release:
Pokemon players from all over the Houston area are getting ready for the 2010 Pokemon Regional Championships, which will be held at The Pavilion Centre at Sam Houston Race Park on Saturday, April 17, 2010. The doors will open at 9:00 am for registration and pre-tournament activities, and the event will start at 11:00 am. The event is free, and open to Pokemon fans and players of all ages, regardless of experience.
Pokemon Regional Championship tournaments offer players the opportunity to win scholarships and other prizes. At this event, $7500 in scholarships will be awarded. Scholarships are transferable, so parents who win a scholarship will be able to transfer it to a child. Last year, The Pokemon Company International, a worldwide leader in trading card games, and a subsidiary of Nintendo, awarded approximately $300,000 in scholarships at various events in the US.
In addition to the scholarships, other prizes include trips (hotel and airfare) to the National Championships, trophies, Pokemon cards and a variety of exclusive Pokemon items. Players are divided into three age groups by year of birth: Juniors (born in 1999 or later), Seniors (born in 1995, 1996, 1997 or 1998) and Masters (born in 1994 or earlier). Prizes, which are the same for all age groups, will be awarded to the top sixteen players in each age group. Each division will have a regional champ.
Participants of the Pokemon tournament will also be eligible to participate and win prizes in the various Pokemon fun events planned around the tournament. Like the tournament, these events will also be free.
"In order to balance the competitive nature of the tournament, we are offering some other fun ways to provide everyone with more opportunities to win, regardless of how well they do in the tournament", said Mike Cook, Premier Tournament Organizer for The Pokemon Company. "We want their Pokemon experience to be a fun, positive one." Players who arrive at the event without their own cards will be allowed to participate with the use of a loaner deck available on site.
This event is being hosted by the Woodlands and Houston-area Pokemon leagues. Pokemon Leagues are free and meet weekly. They offer a great way to learn, practice and make friends. Each league is operated by individual League Leaders. To find a league near you, visit, www.PokemonBUZZ.com.
