Houston Choral Society ends season at FUMC

The Houston Choral Society, an 80-member professional quality community chorus, will conclude its 2009-2010 season with a special combined performance with the Prairie View A&M University choirs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at Foundry United Methodist Church, 8350 Jones Rd. in Houston.
Dr. Betty Devine, artistic director of The Houston Choral Society since its begin more than 20 years ago, invited the Prairie View Concert Chorale and Chamber Singers, under the direction of Professor A. Jan Taylor, to join in this concert because of the chorale society's continuing commitment to music education. Such a venue offers singers in training a chance to demonstrate their talent to a wider audience of music enthusiasts, Devine said.
The concert program will include musical selections from the Prairie View Concert Chorale, Chamber Singers, and The Houston Choral Society and its Chamber Choir, under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Justin Smith.
The Chamber Choir will offer a diverse selection of songs, including a number of e. e. cummings' poems set to music by Vincent Persichetti dominic has a doll, Maggie and milly and molly and may and uncles. The Chamber Choir also will perform Samuel Barber's The Coolin' and America's treasured composer Aaron Copeland's Stomp Your Foot. The Chamber Choir and PVAM's Chamber Singers will team up on Exultate Justi and When Jesus Wept.
The full Houston Choral Society portion of the concert will include Deep River, My God Is A Rock, Ye Shall Have A Song and Shout for Joy by Adolphus Hailstork. Hailstork, a respected composer and professor of music at Old Dominion University in Virginia, wrote Set Me On A Rock (Songs of Sanctuary From the Great Flood) which the Choral Society commissioned and performed at the Wortham Center in May of 2008.
The PVAM Concert Chorale will join the choir for Shout for Joy and for America the Beautiful. Prairie View's portion of the concert will include Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal, Non Nobis Domine and I Know I've Been Changed.
The concert will be preceded by a lecture at 7 p.m. A reception will immediately follow the performance.
