The Cy Woods Wildcats had a lot of tough luck during last year's District 15-5A track meet.
We had some disqualifications that really hurt us last year,'' said head coach Mike Zacos. We were really disappointed with that. It ended up costing us (a shot at the district title).''
This year, if the Wildcats can avoid the false start, get the baton around the track and stay away from the injury bug, they could be the favorites to win the District 15-5A meet.
Of course, Cy Creek and Cy Springs could have something to say about that, too.
I think it could come down to Cy Creek, us and Cy Springs,'' Zacos said. Our goal is to go out and win the district title.''
The District 15-5A meet will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (in case of rain) at Cy Falls High School.
The top two finishers in each event, and top two relay teams, will advance to the Region II-5A meet on May 3-4 in Waco.
Cy Woods, which was third a year ago, enters the district meet with three victories under its belt this season. The Wildcats were first at the Conroe Invitational, Spring Branch Invitational and Cy-Fair Invitational. They also placed second at the Bayshore Olympics.
We have done well,'' Zacos said. We have won a few meets and the kids have improved. But this time of year is when you start to worry about injuries. We just want to be healthy for the district meet.''
Cy Woods' top prospect could be long-distance runner Craig Nowak, who has run 4:21 in the 1,600 meters and 9:40 in the 3,200, Zacos said.
If he can put everything together, he could have a chance to make it out of district and regionals,'' Zacos said.
Isiah Battle also has gone 45-11 in the triple jump. He just missed qualifying for the regional meet a year ago.
Last year, he was a little short on the jumps,'' Zacos said. This year, hopefully, he is peaking at the right time.''
Cy Woods' 4x200 relay team of Cole DeVilliers, Jeffrey Bogan, Bryce Callahan and Colton Huntsman also has gone 1:28.9.
Hopefully, we can get that down a little bit,'' Zacos said. I think those guys have a lot of potential. They are all football players.''
Bogan has a time of 22.0 in the 200 meters, while Cole Gunderson has thrown over 49-0 in the shot put and Jared Baker has topped the 148-foot mark in the discus, Zacos said.
They all should have a good chance to get out of district,'' Zacos said. But we know that our region is very tough. They just have to work hard and see what they can do.''
Zacos said Cy Creek and Cy-Fair should battle for the district title in the girls' division.
This time of year is kind of hit and miss,'' Zacos said. Some kids can crop up and run their best time or jump further than they ever have. Then, you can drop a stick or get disqualified and you are done. That is just the way track is.''
