Falcons turning fortunes around for fall

By TODD HVEEM
CHRONICLE CORRESPONDENT
The Jersey Village Falcons have won only three of their past 20 football games dating back to 2008.
But that has done little to dampen the enthusiasm at spring football practice.
In fact, long-time head coach David Snokhous said this is one of the most spirited" springs he has ever had at the Class 5A school.
The kids have been very fired up about practice,'' he said. And it shows. We are getting better.
When you have kids who have a great attitude and who are willing to work their rears off, you are going to get better,'' he added. Our goal is to get better each and every day.''
The Falcons, who were 0-10 in 2008 and 3-7 in 2009, will conclude four weeks of spring workouts with their spring game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Jersey Village High School.
We will go with our first-team offense against our first-team defense and then rotate it,'' Snokhous said. We will let them all get in. We want to see what all of them can do.''
Snokhous said there will be no live blocking during punts, extra-points and field goals.
We will line up and punt it and kick it (just for the practice),'' he said. But that is about it.''
The Falcons' offense will be paced by junior running back Victor Brown.
He is a good player for us,'' Snokhous said. We plan to give him a lot of work.''
Brown will follow the blocking of returning center Jonathan Prangner, left guard Brandon Foeteh and tackle Jackson Laio.
We have a chance to be decent up front (on the offensive line),'' Snokhous said. We have had to replace a few (linemen), but we have a chance to be pretty good. That is all you can ask for.''
Jersey Village lost four games by a touchdown or less during the 2009 season.
We were in every game, we just didn't make the plays we needed to make,'' Snokhous said.
Snokhous said two-time district champion Cy Creek should be the favorite again in 2010.
They have to be the front-runner,'' he said. Cy Woods also could be a little better than the rest of us, but I don't know about their depth. With all the new schools, it is getting down to a numbers game. We are all pretty much in the same boat.''
Jersey Village will open the season at Tomball on Sept. 3. It then will have nine straight District 15-5A games.
Some of the teams (in our district) chose to play zero week and then have a bye (during the season),'' Snokhous said. We are going to play 10 straight weeks and see how that works out.
We just have to get everybody ready. We still have a lot of questions, but we do have some of them answered.''
Snokhous said he has broke it down into three phases.
We have spring ball, then we have our summer conditioning program and then we have two-a-days,'' he said. There is no rest. We have to be ready to play a district game in the second week of the season.''
