Wildcats roll sevens this weekend

By TODD HVEEM
CHRONICLE CORRESPONDENT
The Cy Woods Wildcats will get their first chance to test their passing skills against several District 15-5A teams when they participate in the Cy Creek 7-on-7 tournament on Saturday at Cy Creek High School.
The Wildcats, who have been one of the top teams in the league over the past two years, return one of the best quarterbacks in the Houston area in Colton Huntsman.
Huntsman passed for more than 2,000 yards and had more than 2,500 yards of total offense during the 2009 campaign.
He is a good one to have coming back,'' said Cy Woods head coach David Jones. But after that, we only have about five or six more who played much last year.''
The Wildcats graduated 80 seniors off last year's team, Jones said.
Weston Card, who was one of the team's wide receivers a year ago, has been moved to safety. Center Cole Gunderson and defensive lineman Dylan Thompson also are back off last year's team.
We will figure out a way to win somehow,'' Jones said. We have a bunch of kids here who are willing to fight like crazy.''
Cy Woods, which did not have spring practice, also will play in the Alief Taylor and Cy Falls 7-on-7 tournaments in June.
The Wildcats will open fall practice on Aug. 2. They will scrimmage The Woodlands and Westfield before opening the season against A&M Consolidated.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

HIGHLIGHTS
Cy Woods: The Wildcats like to spread the ball out and throw the ball all over the field. But David Jones said he does not put much stock in his team's 7-on-7 performance. I am not as big a fan of it as some (coaches),'' he said. It's good for the kids to go and compete and to run our stuff. We don't have a special offense for 7-on-7. But I will never let it determine how good or bad I think we are.''
