Cy Falls to host 7-on-7 qualifier
By TODD HVEEM
The Cy Falls Golden Eagles finished a very respectable third in the 16-team Cy Creek Invitational 7-on-7 tournament.
But only the top two teams in each 16-team event qualify for the 7-on-7 state tournament in July at Texas A&M University.
We didn't qualify for state last year,'' Cy Falls head coach David Raffield said. It was one of the few times we didn't make it. We would like to go back this season.''
The Golden Eagles will host the 16-team Cy Falls Invitational tournament on June 12 at Cy Falls High School.
Some of the other teams scheduled to participate in the event include Cy Creek, Cy Woods, Cy Ridge, Cy Springs, Memorial, Kingwood Park, Spring and Terry.
We will have pool play at 9, 10 and 11 a.m.,'' Raffield said. The semifinals then will be played at 1 p.m. and the championship and third-place games at 2 p.m.''
Cy Falls was scheduled to attend The Woodlands Invitational tournament on Saturday. The Woodlands won the Cy Creek tournament.
We enjoy 7-on-7,'' Raffield said.
We run our offense and our defense. The kids get better at what we do. It is always competitive and always exciting.''
Cy Falls will conclude its 7-on-7 schedule by participating in the Rosenberg-Terry tournament on June 19.
We play four straight Saturdays and then that is it,'' Raffield said. The kids enjoy it. We look at it as great team building.''
Cy Falls is paced by the passing of quarterback Troy Mitchell and receiving of Dean Johnson.
I think the defense is definitely at a definite disadvantage in 7-on-7,'' Raffield said. But it is very important for cornerbacks to learn how to back pedal and break on the ball. It does a lot of good for the offense and the defense.''
