Football: Cy-Fair Bobcats hope to rebound

There was a time not too long ago when the Cy-Fair Bobcats were on top of the high school football world.
All that has changed.
In fact, since the opening of Cy Woods, Cy Lakes and Cy Ranch, Cy-Fair has taken a back seat to just about everybody in District 15-5A.
The Bobcats hope to change that in 2010.
This is a new team and a new attitude, and we are excited about it,'' Cy-Fair head coach Ed Pustejovsky said after the Bobcats' annual spring football game.
The Bobcats were 0-10 in 2009. But they return quarterback Chris Mangrum, three offensive linemen and tailbacks John Jacob and Alex Hall to this year's team.
Mangrum, who threw the game-winning touchdown to tight end Sean Irwin in the Maroon-White spring game, split time with Blake Reese a year ago before a broken collarbone sidelined him for a good part of the season.
Pustejovsky, who loves to run to set up the run, said the Bobcats are going to have a more diversified offense in 2010.
We want to make the defense defend the whole field,'' Pustejovsky said. We will run a little more option and may throw a little bit more. But, hopefully, we'll still have the ability to make three yards when we need to.''
Cy-Fair, which also returns several defensive linemen, will begin fall drills on Aug. 9. It will take on Katy Taylor in a non-district game at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Berry Center before moving into District 15-5A play.
This year, all of the Cy-Fair ISD teams will have only one non-district game to prepare for the conference chase.
