Cy-Fair firefighters volunteer at MDA camp
From a press release:
Cy-Fair volunteer firefighters are starting a new tradition by spending June 6 through 11 as camp counselors for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, providing children with special needs the unique chance to participate in outdoor activities.
The largest volunteer fire department supporting MDA in the country, Cy-Fair is translating years of fundraising into much-needed support at camp. The department began visiting camp last year and then started encouraging all members to come as counselors this year.
MDA camps are equipped with the medical facilities and personnel to house children with neuromuscular diseases and provide an inclusive environment, emphasizing ability over disability. Former campers often credit their success as adults to the confidence gained at camp, where they are surrounded by peers and solitude is broken.
Campers spend their days swimming, horseback riding, going to dances, riding in sidecars of motorcycles and participating in activities enjoyed by their peers everyday. Camp even includes trophies.
MDA pairs each campers with a personal counselor to support them throughout camp. As trained emergency personnel, Cy-Fair's volunteer firefighters are ideal for the responsibility.
MDA is a nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education.
