For almost 20 years, high school basketball teams in the Spring, Klein and Cy-Fair areas had to join the North Houston Summer Basketball League if they wanted to play competitively during the summer months.
For the next three weeks, Alodia is hosting its second boys' and girls summer basketball league at Salem Lutheran Church and various Cy-Fair ISD schools.
We have 44 boys and girls varsity and sub-varsity teams (in the league),'' said Alodia basketball director Tim Schumacher, who used to be the head basketball coach at Klein Collins.
We had a lot of success with this last year and definitely wanted to do it again,'' Schumacher said.
The girls varsity and JV teams will play on Monday nights, the boys varsity clubs will play on Tuesday nights and the boys JV teams will play on Thursdays through the month of June.
Some of the top teams in the boys' league include Tomball, Klein Collins, Magnolia, Magnolia West, Cy Falls, Cy-Fair, Cy Creek, Jersey Village and Cy Woods.
Some of the best girls' teams in the league are Klein, Klein Collins, Cy Creek, Tomball and private school Concordia Lutheran.
Our mission is to build future leaders through sport,'' Schumacher said. There are various ways to do that. You can do it through youth leagues and club teams. We try and support the high school coaches and programs. This fills a void (for them in the summer).''
League games last one hour. High school coaches are not allowed to coach their teams. Teams are usually coached by former players, Schumacher said.
We have learned that kids are involved in so many things, including AAU (on the weekends), that it is better to play two games in one night than to expect them to come out here twice per week,'' Schumacher said.
Schumacher said Langham Creek head coach Charles Ament and Cy Falls head coach Jim Draudt have been very instrumental" in starting the program.
We have been fortunate to have the support of the head coaches,'' Schumacher said.
Our goal is just to keep the teammates playing together in the summer. We don't worry so much about who wins and loses. In fact, if every game was a two-point game and all the kids got to play, we have achieved what we wanted to accomplish.''
Alodia also offers basketball players individual dribbling, shooting and team camps.
We are trying to keep it going 12 months out of the year,'' Schumacher said. We find out what people need the most and then try and offer them a solution.''
