Wildcats look back on solid year

By TODD HVEEM

The Cy Woods Wildcats were very disappointed with the way the 2010 baseball season came to a crashing end.
But head coach Thomas Loria knows there is only one team that gets to end the season with a victory.
Unless you win the state title, everybody is going to be disappointed (in their last game),'' Loria said. Our season was a good one. We went in without a lot of varsity experience.''
Cy Woods finished third in the final District 15-5A standings behind co-champions Cy-Fair and Cy Falls. The Tigers then lost their bi-district playoff series to Round Rock Stony Point to end the year 23-10-1.
I am very proud of the way we handled some adversity in the middle of the season,'' Loria said. Stony Point had a very good team. And it was a really good series.
The kids were disappointed the way it ended,'' he added. But it doesn't matter when you lose, any round you bow out you are going to be disappointed.''
Cy Woods graduated 14 players off its 16-man varsity roster. Only sophomore center fielder Gary Tesch and junior left fielder Patrick Gant will return in 2011.
Our junior class is very small because most of those kids went to Cy Ranch,'' Loria said. We will be very young next year. We will have a few seniors, but the majority of our guys will be juniors and sophomores.''
Cy Woods is playing in the Gold Glove League against other Cy-Fair ISD teams this summer. Loria said it should do his young players a lot of good.
I think it will really help the kids,'' he said. We also will play in three competitive tournaments that should prepare us for district. As young as we are, we need to gain as much experience as we can if we are going to be successful in district.''
