Cypress' Washington holds line at Arizona
Cy-Woods grad Justin Washington has earned a starting role for the Arizona University Wildcats and is leading the team in sacks, despite being only a freshman.
Listed near the bottom of the depth chart at the start of camp this summer, Washington earned a starting spot at the start of the season.
As a starting freshman defensive tackle, Washington has nine tackles, seven solo, and a team leading two sacks for the 2-0 Wildcats.
Washington played junior varsity his sophomore and junior years because Cy-Woods, which opened in 2006, didn't yet have a varsity squad. In 2008, its first varsity season, Washington and Cy-Woods went 8-3 and advanced to the Class 5A Division I Region II semifinals before falling to Dallas Skyline.
He earned a 2008 unanimous First-team All-District 15-5A defense selection for the Cy-Woods Wildcats and was selected for the inaugural 2008 Space City Classic all-star football game showcasing Houston talent.
Washington will lead the defensive front at home against 9th ranked Iowa (2-0) Saturday at 9:30 CT on ESPN.
