Local nurse wins state honor

The Texas Nurses Association (TNA) District Nine Chapter named Karen Lyon, associate dean of nursing for the Texas Woman's University Institute of Health Sciences-Houston Center, one of 20 Outstanding Nurses of 2010.

Dr. Lyon has been a professor of nursing and associate dean of the TWU Nelda
C. Stark College of Nursing in Houston since 2009. Prior to joining TWU, she was a nursing professor for the University of Texas at El Paso, where she created the fast-track nursing program for the university.

In her more than 36-year nursing career, Dr. Lyon has held various leadership positions at several hospitals, served as the manager of education for Baxter Healthcare Corp. and founded her own health care consulting firm. She has served as an officer of many nursing organizations and has been published at the national level in professional journals such as <i>Critical Care Nursing Quarterly</i> and <I>The Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing</i>.

Dr. Lyon will receive her award during the TNA District Nines 20th Annual
Nursing Celebration to be held Nov. 18 in Houston.

Since 1991, TNA District Nine has annually recognized 20 outstanding nurses and awarded nursing scholarships and research grants. More than 300 nurses of all areas of practice have been recognized and more than $40,000 in scholarships and grants have been awarded.
