District promoted healthy lunches during special week
As part of National School Lunch Week, Oct. 11-15, the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District Child Nutrition Department launched the "School Lunch - What's on Your Tray?" interactive campaign designed to excite students about healthy school lunches.
Students at Matzke and McFee Elementary schools received special prizes as they chose a variety of foods for lunch.
Natalie Juergens' fifth-grade class at Matzke planned its school's menu for Oct. 12, while McFee students decorated the cafeteria with their artwork.
"It is important to involve students in the selection of food in the cafeteria; increasing students' awareness of the meal planning process can help students make healthier decisions at home and in the cafeteria," said Emmy Andrepont, CFISD coordinator for child nutrition education.
"School Lunch - What's on Your Tray?" will be featured in school cafeterias nationwide this fall to emphasize all the components of well-balanced school meals. The campaign is sponsored by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association and the Milk Processors Education Program.
Serving more than 31 million children every school day, the federally funded National School Lunch Program provides nutritionally balanced low-cost and free meals to students. The program, which has been serving the nation's children for more than 60 years, requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards.
Meals are based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, meaning they contain no more than 30 percent of calories from fat and less than 10 percent from saturated fat.
School lunches include fruits and vegetables, grains and proteins as well as milk, and must provide one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances of protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, calcium and calories.
Meals are served in age-appropriate serving sizes, meaning students receive the amount of food their bodies need.
