HS football playoffs: Cy-Fair 24 Alief Elsik 14
Junior running back John Jacob ran 24 times for 109 yards and scored three touchdowns as Cy-Fair beat Alief Elsik 24-14 to advance to the second round of the 5A, Division I playoffs.
Cy-Fair took advantage of Elsik miscues. The Rams fumbled twice and committed nine penalties for 75 yards. They outgained the Bobcats 376-229 but didn't manage a score until late in the the second half.
By the time senior running back Jerry Bynum (18 carries, 103 yards) scored on a two-yard run with 0:57 remaining in the third quarter, Elsik already trailed Cy-Fair 24-0.
Jacob scored all three Cy-Fair touchdowns, the first an 18-yard run with 8:58 remaining in the first quarter, that gave the Bobcats a 7-0 lead.
He hit paydirt again later in the first quarter when quarterback Chris Mangram (3 of 9, 13 yards) found Jacob with a three-yard touchdown pass. The Bobcats added a Blake Miles field goal to lead 17-0 at the break.
Jacob's 43-yard touchdown run in the third quarter put the game out of reach.
For Elsik, Dontrell Morrison caught five passes for 129 yards, including a 60 yard touchdown from Kurt Lambert (12 of 27, 224 yards) in the fourth quarter.
Cy-Fair advances to play the winner of Katy versus Bellaire in Round Two.
