HS football playoffs: Cy Creek, Demas beat Alief Hastings
Cypress Creek scored five straight touchdowns to turn a halftime tie into a rout, beating Hastings 49-28 Friday night at Crump Stadium in first round 5A, Division I playoff action.
Junior running back Devan Demas (19 carries, 200 yards) and quarterback Chuckie Keaton (13 carries, 52 yards) ripped off 66 and 61 yard touchdown runs, respectively, on consecutive Cougar possessions after the half, breaking a 21-21 tie.
Robert Walter (five carries, 45 yards) scored on a 10-yard run with 5:54 remaining in the third quarter to extend Cypress Creek's lead to 42-21.
Hastings spotted Cypress Creek two touchdowns in the first quarter before storming back to take the lead.
After Keeton's 16-yard run made it 14-0 with 1:32 remaining in the first quarter, James Arnett returned a Cougars fumble 70 yards for a touchdown to put the Bears on the board. Then quarterback Ricardo Wilson (17 of 30, 366 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions) engineered consecutive scoring drives.
Wilson connected with sophomore Jaquaries Johnson on a 26-yard touchdown pass, then wide receiver Terrence Marshall (six catches, 149 yards) on a 69-yarder to give Hastings a 21-14 lead.
But it proved fleeting.
Keeton's nine yard run evened the game at halftime.
Hastings didn't score again until there was 1:26 remaining in the game. The Bears only gained 34 yards rushing for the game on 19 carries.
For Hastings, wide receiver Stephen Lafleur caught seven passes for 149 yards and a touchdown.
Cypress Creek advances to the second round, where they will play the winner of Cinco Ranch and Houston Lamar.
