HS football playoffs: Cy Ridge nipped by Alief Taylor

Quarterback Jordan Are' ran 19 times for 113 yards, including a one-yard game-winner with 7:27 remaining in the game as Alief Taylor held off upstart Cy-Ridge, 37-36 in first round playoff action at Pridgeon Stadium.

The Lions (10-1) led 14-0 and 28-7 before taking a 30-21 lead into halftime. But Cy-Ridge stormed back in the second half.

Running back Casper Issac's 12 yard touchdown run with 6:01 remaining in the third quarter cut Taylor's lead to two points, then senior quarterback Andrew Gonzalez  thrust the Rams into the lead.

Gonzalez (eight of 16, 122 yards, 2 TDs) scored on a keeper with 11:24 left in the fourth quarter, then ran for the two point conversion to make it 36-30.

That's when Are' (12 of 20, 181 yards, three TDs) engineered the winning scoring drive.

For Cy-Ridge (6-5), sophomore running back Renderick Childs ran 14 times for 100 yards and junior Demarias Porter seven times for 82 yards.

Childs finished the season with 1,009 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns.

Derrick Lair (15 carries, 82 yards) also paced the ground game for Taylor, which advances to a second round match-up against the winner off Houston Madison versus Houston Memorial.
