Cy Woods' Desiree Elliott, Cy Falls' Kendall Courtney and Cy Creek's Ashley Vrana will represent their respective schools for the final time at this week's Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 4A-5A volleyball all-star game in Arlington.
The standout trio are part of an East All-Star team that also includes Klein's Hayley Koop, Pearland's Marissa Collins, Stratford's Mary Ellen Luck, Fort Bend Travis' Ashley Bannister and Brenham's Bethany Yeager.
The Class 4A-5A all-star game begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Arlington Lamar High School, and follows the Class A-3A contest that has a 5 p.m. start.
Cy Woods went 133-22 with Elliott (LSU) including her freshman year (2006) when the school opened and did not field a varsity team (the junior varsity went 31-0).
In Elliott's three varsity seasons, the Lady Wildcats were 30-10, 37-5 and 35-7 (last season), and advanced in the playoff bracket every season.
Elliott was Cy Woods' first All-American (American Volleyball Coaches Association), and was all-district on the court and in the classroom.
She's a powerhouse and very explosive," Cy Woods coach Ashley Ahlfinger said. She was a middle blocker as a sophomore and junior, but then as a senior, she played all the way around, and she also has a lethal serve."
Courtney (University of Jacksonville) was a three-year starter and Cy Falls' full-time setter the past two seasons.
She was our leader and quarterback, and there's no doubt we'll miss having her on the team," Cy Falls coach Kathy Stephenson said. She visited several schools, and she really likes sand volleyball as well, and she'll have a great opportunity for that in Florida.
She's extremely responsible, focused and determined, and being an all-star is a well-deserved honor."
Courtney was the district's Most Valuable Setter in 2009, and named to numerous all-district teams as a player and student, and academic all-state.
Vrana, an outside hitter-middle blocker, plans to walk on at Texas A&M following a sparkling three-year varsity career at Cy Creek.
She played middle blocker for us in high school, but she's really an outside hitter, and that's where she was in club," Cy Creek coach Deborah Jaehne said. We're really going to miss her because we set the ball to her no matter where she was on the floor.
She's a go-to player, and leads quietly by example in a low-key style. I like players like that, and the all-star game is a nice way for her to wrap it up."
