HS football playoffs: Katy smothers Cy-Fair
The undefeated Katy Tigers spotted Cy-Fair a 7-0 lead before rolling to a 55-20 second round playoff victory Saturday at Berry Center.
Katy gained 606 yards of total offense, managed 33 first downs (vs. 10 for Cy-Fair) and averaged more than 8 yards per rush. The Tigers led 34-14 at halftime.
Senior running back Donovonn Young ran 19 times for 194 yards and junior Adam Taylor 17 times for 142 yards, combining for five touchdowns for Katy. Quarterback Brooks Haack threw for 184 yards and two scores, a 6-yarder to Jordan Thompson (six catches, 99 yards) in the first quarter that tied the game at 7-7, then a 25-yard strike to Chris Bethley in the second quarter.
Cy-Fair's John Jacob (18 carries, 91 yards) scored on a 15-yard run on the Bobcats' first drive and they led 7-0. Katy responded with four straight scores.
Wide receiver Christian Cook caught five passes for 134 yards for Cy-Fair. Reserve junior quarterback Jovan Galagaza completed five of 14 passes for 100 yards.
Jacob, a junior, ran for 1,192 yards and 16 touchdowns on the season for Cy-Fair (9-3).
Katy advances and will play North Shore of Galena Park (11-1) next Saturday, Nov. 27, 1 p.m. at Pasadena Memorial.
