Pearland dominates Cy Creek to reach regional final
For the second straight week, the Pearland Oilers were a perfectly complete team.
There has been chatter that Pearland’s defense isn’t strong enough or that its offense is one-dimensional. The Oilers put all that talk to rest on Saturday with a 54-7 win over Cypress Creek.
With the win, Pearland (13-0) advances to the Class 5A Division I Region III championship against Katy at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Rice.
“I told the guys that a lot of people don’t know what happens on the inside with this team,” Pearland coach Tony Heath said. “We know how hard everyone works. We know that it takes everyone playing well to win games. We know what it takes to be here.”
In the first half, Pearland appeared to be invincible. They scored six touchdowns in the first half to take a 40-0 lead at the break. The Oilers had three touchdown runs, one touchdown pass, a fumble recovery for a TD and an interception return in that half.
“We played a very complete game, I thought,” Heath said. “I think everyone really stepped up - offense, defense and special teams.”
It was the second week in a row that the Oilers dominated in a playoff game. Last week, in a 51-22 win over Beaumont West Brook, Pearland was seemingly unstoppable as well.
“We have tried not to let the talk about our weaknesses this year get to us,” defensive end Sam Ukwuachu, who had three sacks, said. “We just try to get better every week and we have. I think that shows right now.”
After a dominant first half, Pearland showed off some of its unsung heroes in the second.
Back up running up Jackie Robinson played the entire second half and had 14 carries for 78 yards and a touchdown.
“The last two weeks we have been able to get some kids in the game that haven’t played all year,” Heath said. “I am happy when we are playing well and we can get some of those guys in because they are playing really good football right now, too.”
Cypress Creek finished the year 9-4 and this is the furthest the program has gone in the playoffs since 1990.
Pearland is back in the regional finals for the first time since 2006.
“We have been here before and we know how to prepare,” Heath said. “This will be a really exciting week for our kids, our community and the coaches. To be able to still be coaching these kids at this time of the year is special.”
