HS football preview: Cy-Woods v. Memorial
Cy-Woods takes on Memorial in the 5A football quarterfinals on Saturday.
Cypress Woods, 10-3, rolled Clear Creek 52-34 in last week's regional semifinals. Fredrick Anderson rushed for four touchdowns in the win.
Anderson, a senior, spearheads a balanced, deep rushing attack for Head Coach David Jones. Cy-Woods has gained 3,085 yards on the ground this season, and Anderson is responsible for 957 of those yards. He has scored 18 rushing touchdowns.
Quarterback Colton Huntsman is the teams second-leading rusher. He has churned out 795 rushing yards, scoring 14 touchdowns. As a passer, Huntsman has thrown for 2,327 yards, 22 touchdowns and only four interceptions.
The versatile Fredrick Anderson is also the team's leading receiver. The senior has 40 receptions for 817 yards and 10 scoring grabs. Gary Tesch, a junior wide receiver, has hauled in 20 balls for 460 yards and three scores.
The Memorial Mustangs, 8-5, dropped Port Arthur Memorial 34-10 last week in the regional semifinals. Memorial quarterback Wayne Taylor rushed for three touchdowns and passed for one in the victory.
Memorial Head Coach Gary Koch will look for his monster rushing attack to do significant damage. The Mustangs have rushed for 4,046 yards on the season.
Boomer White, a junior running back, has run for 2,073 yards and 24 touchdowns. Quarterback Wayne Taylor, a 6-foot senior, is the team's second leading rusher. He has gained 1,521 yards on the season and scored 16 touchdowns on the ground. As a passer, Taylor isn't bad either. He has thrown for 1,132 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Tony Abiassi, a senior tight end, is the leading receiver for Memorial. He has 31 receptions for 594 yards and seven scoring grabs. Brad Strake, a senior wide receiver, has hauled in 17 balls for 224 yards and two touchdowns.
Saturday's kick-off is slated for 1 p.m. at Tully Stadium.
