Cy-Fair Roundup: Battle for berths heats up

Cy Falls is No. 1 in Texas and 17-5A, and with the ever-surging Lady Eagles expected to continue to roll, the true battle may be for second place, and the other three district playoff berths.

Cy Woods, Cy Creek and defending state champion Cy-Fair had 3-1 district starts, and right behind at 2-2 were Langham Creek, Jersey Village and Cy Ranch, so it's obvious there are plenty of teams that plan to take it right down to the wire.

"Our district is a lot like a college conference where any team can come out and win on any night," Cy Woods coach Virginia Flores said, "and I'm blessed to have great assistant coaches (Michelle Curry and Todd Abbott) and a group of girls who always work really hard."

Cy Woods, in only its fourth varsity season, is going for a third straight playoff berth with a roster that includes seniors Alexus Hebert (5-6 guard), Jennifer Nash (5-10 guard) and Jourdan Hicks (5-9 forward), juniors Justice Crisp (5-8 guard), Desarae Robertson (5-8 forward), Kristen Anglin (5-7 foward-post), Audrey Garcia (5-8 guard-forward) and Chelsi Grimes (5-0 guard), and freshman Olivia Ogwumike (5-11 post), the younger sister of former Cy-Fair and now Stanford standouts Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike.

Nash, Garcia, Herbert, Grimes and Hicks can be found in the regular starting lineup, and Flores consistently uses her entire roster.

"The 21-4 overall and 3-1 start in district have been total team efforts," said Flores, a former head coach at Magnolia and assistant at Cy-Fair.

Cy Woods missed the postseason playing with no seniors in its first varsity season in 2007-08, but the Lady Wildcats have advanced the past two years posting 20-plus win seasons along the way (23-10 in 2008-09 and 22-10 last year).

District action continues for Cy Woods at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, at Jersey Village, and at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, with visiting Jersey Village.

The Lady Wildcats 17-5A start featured wins over Cy Lakes 64-34, Langham Creek 36-31 and Cy Creek 57-51, and a 52-50 loss to Cy-Fair.
