Local HS grads square off on the college hardwood

Cy-Falls HS grad Devin Gibson and Hastings HS grad P.J. Alawoya faced off in a Southland Conference battle Wednesday.

Gibson posted a double-double and UTSA prevailed 65-61 over McNeese State and Alawoya.

Gibson scored 20 points behind a 13-for-16 night at the free-throw line and dished out 10 assists in registering his fifth double-double of the season and the ninth of his illustrious career. The Houston native was two rebounds shy of his second triple-double of the year and he added three steals

At Cy-Falls, Gibson was District 17-5A MVP, averaging 12.5 points per game, six assists per game and four rebounds per game as a senior.

He leads UTSA in scoring at 16.2 points per game and is second on the team in rebounding, grabbing 5.4 boards per game.

Alawoya the SLC's leading rebounder, came through with 13 caroms for McNeese in the loss.

He was one of the standouts on the Hastings team that was ranked among the top 20 prep teams in the nation at one point. He averaged 15 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks per game, and made 61 percent of his shots.

Alawoya had three-year career totals of 919 rebounds and 353 blocked shots, and single-game highs of 23 rebounds and six blocks. He was team captain, All-District and named to the Greater Houston-area All-Star team. Alawoya played on three district championship teams.

Alawoya was born on Dec. 16, 1988, and his parents are Robert Alawoya and Sade Akintunde.
