Local HS alums go head-to-head in college softball action

Cy-Fair and Austin High School alums went head-to head in a fierce battle on the college softball diamond recently.

Cy-Fair High School graduate Meghan Fisher blasted a two-out three-run homer to left-center to give East Texas Baptist a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. Mississippi College rallied with three runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run double to left by Austin High School graduate Sarah Smaltz.

After the smoke cleared, Fisher and ETB defeated Smaltz and MC, 7-6.

On the day Fisher was two-for-three at the plate, driving in four runs and scoring two.

Fisher played at Cy-Fair for coach Debbie Furlow from 2003-07, where she was named First-Team All-District and MVP. She was also named Offensive Player of the Year. Fisher was named All-State and Academic All-State as a senior in 2006-07. In 2005-2006 she was named Defensive Player of the Year and Second-Team All-District. She was Rookie of the Year as a freshman. Fisher graduated magna cum laude.

For the game, Austin grad Sarah Smaltz went two-for-four from the plate, driving in two runs in the loss.

Smaltz played for Coach Terry Reyna at Austin. In 2008, Smaltz was named Most Valuable Player and First Team All-District.

Sarah is the daughter of Randy and LeeAnn Smaltz. She was born on August 8, 1990, and is majoring in criminal justice.
