Cy-Fair Roundup: Raffield moving on from Cy Falls
Longtime Cy Falls staff member David Raffield is the new football head coach at A&M Consolidated in College Station, and that means saying goodbye to a 19-year association with the Golden Eagles.
"I helped (former Cy Falls head) coach Wayne Hooks open Cy Falls in 1992, and it's just been a wonderful experience," Raffield said. "I have a daughter who will graduate from Cy Falls this spring, and I've really enjoyed being at the school, and how much it has meant to me and my family."
Hooks retired following the 2002 season, and that opened the door for Raffield, who was 56-39 overall and 38-22 in district with five playoff teams in eight years at Cy Falls.
His best season was 2006 when he took the Eagles to the Class 5A Division II state finals during a 12-4 campaign that ended with a loss to Cedar Hill.
It's the only time a Cy-Fair ISD football team has played for a state championship.
The 2006 seniors came in as freshmen in Raffield's first season as head coach, and they were a big part of 29 wins over three seasons (including 8-5 in 2004 and 9-5 in 2005).
"We had 11 sophomore starters in 2004, so they did have a huge roll during what was a memorable run," Raffield said, "and that being my first senior class as a head coach made it even more special in 2006."
The Eagles went 9-3 and recorded a fourth consecutive playoff berth in 2007, and also advanced in 2009 before closing at 5-6.
Under Raffield, Cy Falls missed the postseason in 2003 (3-7), 2008 (3-6), and in 2010 despite a 7-3 mark (tied for fourth place but lost a playoff tiebreaker against Cy Ridge).
Cy Falls assistant head coach-defensive coordinator Kirk Eaton has served with Raffield since 1998 and is among the candidates for the open position.
"He's holding down the fort," said Raffield, who reports to A&M Consolidated on Monday, March 28.
A&M Consolidated is the defending 12-5A champion and competes in a district with Copperas Cove, Belton, Bryan, Temple, Killeen Ellison, Harker Heights and Shoemaker.
"I don't know a lot about that district, and I'll be working with the outstanding coaching staff that's in place to get up to speed," Raffield said. "A&M Consolidated is a one-school town right now that will probably expand in the future, and it's a great place to raise a family, so we're excited about the new challenge."
Raffield replaces former A&M Consolidated coach Jim Slaughter, who is now the San Angelo ISD athletic director.
District 17-5A tennis
The 17-5A Tennis Tournament is less than two weeks way, and some of the district contingent will compete in final tune-ups like this week's Klein ISD Invitational.
The Klein event is Friday and Saturday, March 25-26, at Klein High School.
The 17-5A championships are at 8 a.m. on April 5 (boys doubles and singles, and mixed doubles) and April 6 (girls doubles and singles), and at 1:30 p.m. on April 7 (finals and playbacks) at Cy Woods High School.
The Class 5A Region 3 Tournament is April 18-22 in Deer Park, and the University Interscholastic League State Tournament is May 9-10 in Austin.
