Prom dresses sought for teens in need

The seventh annual Prom Dress Give-Away is currently underway at the Lone Star College-CyFair (LSC-CyFair) Branch Library to replenish the library’s Prom Closet.

Each year, the Prom Closet provides free prom dresses, shoes, jewelry, accessories and new makeup to teens in need from Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, other Houston-area school districts ranging from south in La Porte to north in Montgomery, private schools, charter schools, special needs schools and teens who are home schooled.

“Dresses can be short or long, should be stylish, new, clean – not necessarily dry-cleaned but undamaged and without stains - and put in plastic bags,” says Elise Sheppard, LSC-CyFair teen librarian and co-organizer of the Prom Closet. “Please, no dresses from the 1980s disco scene, no velvet dresses and no dresses worn by grandmothers of the bride, although vintage dresses are fine.”

Donations can be dropped off at the customer service desk in the LSC-CyFair Branch Library, located at 9191 Barker Cypress. Dresses will be available for teens in need to try on and take home at no charge from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, April 2, April 9, April 16 and April 30, in room 131 in the library, as well as by appointment.

Donations are being accepted, too, at the West University Branch Library, 6108 Auden, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Tuesday through Thursday; 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
