Cy-Fair/Northwest roundup: Sweep sword double-edged

It was feast and then famine for the four District 17-5A girls soccer playoff qualifiers last week.

The clubs started by all earning first-round victories. District co-champion Cy Creek crushed MacArthur 8-0, 17-5A co-champ Cy-Fair beat Alief Taylor 5-1, third place Cy Ranch blanked Elsik 2-0, and Jersey Village was all over Aldine 5-0.

It was also a sweep in the second round, but this time, it went against the 17-5A members with Memorial downing Cy Creek 3-0, Katy Taylor over Cy-Fair 2-0, Seven Lakes stopping Cy Ranch 4-0, and Cinco Ranch holding off Jersey Village 2-0.

"We went out sooner than expected, but it was still a great season for the girls," Cy Creek coach Kathy Fling said. "We came back in the final week of district and beat Jersey Village (5-0) and Cy-Fair (2-1), and that gave us a share of the district championship with Cy-Fair, and we received the No. 1 seed through a tiebreaker.

"I really felt like I had one of my best and most well-balanced teams this year, so it made going out in the second round a little tough to take."

In the 8-0 bidistrict victory, Stephanie Vazquez scored two goals, and Aubrie O'Connor, Christen May, Samantha Buck, Kara Simmang, Claire Lawson and Abby Buck netted one each.

"It was a good win, but winning by that margin in the playoffs doesn't really help you," Fling said. "We came back the next game and played a good first half, but we just didn't play as well in the second half."

Cy-Fair's Lynsey Curry put on a show scoring four goals and passing out an assist in the postseason triumph over Alief Taylor, while teammate Hannah Dauzat added a goal and two assists.

The 17-5A boys went 2-2 in bidistrict with district champion Cy-Fair beating Nimitz 2-1 for its first playoff win since 1995, and Cy Falls shutting out Elsik 2-0.

Langham Creek fell to MacArthur 3-0 and Cy Lakes lost to Hastings 5-2 in the first round, while Cy-Fair was eliminated by Seven Lakes 1-0 and Cy Falls was knocked out by Strake Jesuit 3-1 in overtime in the second round.

Langham Creek senior Kirby Kramer finished as 17-5A's first medalist and Cy Ridge freshman Emily Ming was second to earn a trip to regionals.
