LSC-CyFair launches two new health occupation certificate programs

Lone Star College-CyFair’s (LSC-CyFair) Continuing Education department will be launching two new health occupation certificate programs in May.

Registration is now underway for the Medication Aide program with classes beginning Monday, May 16, and the Pharmacy Technician program with classes beginning Monday, May 23. To be eligible for these programs, a GED or high school diploma is required.

Non-licensed nursing personnel employed in licensed health care agencies can gain instruction in preparation and administration of designated medications as well as learn the responsibilities associated with such administration through the Medication Aide program.

This program requires a student to have been employed for 90 days in a nursing home, MHMR or TDCJ facility within the 12-month period preceding the course. A student must also be currently employed in a facility as a nurse's aide or non-licensed direct care staff person on the first official day of class.

For students who want to work in a retail pharmacy setting, the Pharmacy Technician program provides the skills necessary to successfully test for the Texas State Board of Pharmacy Technician exam and gain employment.

This program will review pharmacy industry topics such as federal laws, drug storage requirements, pharmacology, terminology and calculations as well as pharmacy operations such as customer service, maintaining patient records and an overview of insurance claims.

"The Pharmacy Technician and Medication Aide certificate programs are great additions to LSC-CyFair’s health care program options," said Kenya White, Director of Continuing Education.
