Five local HS grads help Houston down UAB

Several local high school graduates played key roles in the Houston Cougars' 8-7 win over UAB in college baseball action on Sunday.

Langham Creek High School graduate Codey Morehouse went 1-for-2, with two runs scored and a RBI.

At Langham Creek HS, Morehouse was coached by Armando Sedeno. As a senior, Morehouse was a Preseason First Team All-Houston selection. Codey Lewis Morehouse was born Sept. 13, 1989, in Houston, and is the son of Craig and Cindy Morehouse. Morehouse was also recruited by UTSA, Sam Houston State, Louisiana Tech, and Angelo State.

Clear Lake High School graduate Jake Runte had an RBI single to left field that was bobbled in the outfield, allowing him to reach base safely. With the go ahead run on third base, Memorial High School graduate M.P. Cokinos laid a bunt down, giving Runte the chance to score and the Cougars the win.

Cokinos finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

At Memorial High School, Cokinos played for head coach Jeremy York. Cokinos led the Houston area in home runs and was a First-Team All-District selection, Louisville Slugger High School All-American and Houston Area Baseball Coaches Association All-Star catcher. He also was a Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association All-State Second Team Catcher and Collegiate Baseball All-American Honorable Mention. Michael Paul Cokinos was born June 18, 1990 and is the son of Michael and Rhonda Cokinos.

Runte finished with a hit, an RBI and scored a run.

At Clear Lake High School, Runte was a three year letter winner for Coach Rupert Jaso. Runte was a two-time selection to the All-District team, and led in batting average, steals, triples, walks and assists. He holds the Clear Lake High School record for single season assists and career assists. Jacob Thomas Runte was born Aug. 6, 1989 and is the son of Jim and Diane Runte.

Mayde Creek High School graduate Mo Wiley made the start against the Blazers. He gave up three earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts in six innings. Wiley did not give up a hit in his first five innings on the mound.

At Mayde Creek High School, Wiley was coached by Lynn Leonard. As a senior, Wiley was a Third-Team HSAB All-Houston selection, and a Second-Team All-District pitcher. He was a First-Team All-District pitcher in 2005-2006. Matthew Oliver Wiley was born on Dec. 11, 1989, and is the Son of Mark and Jane Wiley.

Klein Oak High School graduate Austin Gracey went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

At Klein Oak High School, Gracey Played for Head Coach Royce Kennedy. As a senior, Gracey advanced to the third round of the state playoffs, was a First Team All-District selection, a First Team All-Greater Houston honoree and the Team MVP. Austin Garrett Gracey was born Sept. 6, 1988, and is the son of James and Tracey Gracey.
