Golf: Cy-Fair sweeps to crowns
Cy-Fair swept District 17-5A golf championships last week, and the Bobcats captured the boys title with only one senior among its top 10 players.
"I guess you could say we are young with only a single senior on our two teams," Cy-Fair boys golf coach Rusty Hicks said. "Hopefully the experience these younger players are gaining will help next year, and for years to come, and we're not through with this season just yet."
Cy-Fair's No. 2 boys team of junior Blake Powers, sophomores Stephen Chambers and Nick Geisler, and freshmen Andrew Reynolds and Devin Mikulec captured the 17-5A championship after trailing Cy Woods following the first of two rounds on April 6-7 at the Cypress Lakes Course.
The Langham Creek boys beat out Cy Woods and Cy-Fair No. 1 for second place and the other Class 5A Region III berth.
Competing at district for the No. 1 Bobcats were lone senior Jonathan Singleton, who earned an individual region berth as 17-5A's second medalist, and juniors Hudson Jaubert, Parker Rodgers, Craig Condon and Garrett Cook.
"I'm extremely proud of all our players and how they handled different kinds of adversity," Hicks said. "Our school motto of 'Bobcat Fight Never Dies' was truly on display."
The Cy-Fair and Langham Creek boys are at regionals on Wednesday and Thursday, April 20-21, at the Eagle Pointe Course in Mont Belvieu, and Hicks is looking for a field full of powerful teams including Cinco Ranch, Memorial and Clear Lake, among others.
Langham Creek features 17-5A individual champion Michael Hanigan and district runner-up Connor Bertlshofer, along with fellow seniors Logan White and Chris Rollow, and junior Garrett Peterson.
Hanigan defended his district title by shooting a one-over 73 over the final 18 holes.
"It was an incredible round and it put us in position to edge out Cy Woods for second place and that last region berth," Langham Creek coach Anthony Rangel said. "He's been our No. 1 guy for two seasons, and it's quite an accomplishment to go back-to-back as district champ.
"As a team, it's the first trip to regionals in a long time, and we're very excited, especially for the seniors. We missed regionals by one shot last year, and I think the team was third two years ago, too, so this is special for them."
The Cy-Fair girls beat out district runner-up Cy Woods and third place Cy Creek for their 17-5A crown on March 30-31 at Cypress Lakes.
Cy Woods junior Courtney Zietman was the 17-5A girls champion, and she combined with seniors Emily Franco, Meghan Lund and Grace Duncan, and sophomore Arabella Cruz, for a region team berth.
The Region III girls tournament is Monday and Tuesday, April 18-19, at Eagle Pointe.
Earning individual region berths were Langham Creek senior Kirby Kramer and Cy Ridge freshman Emily Ming.
Region teams will go for spots at the University Interscholastic League State Tournament on May 12-13 in Austin.
