Cougar girls hope to take next step

The Cy Creek girls cross country team was able to beat Cy-Fair during the regular season last year, but when it came to district, Cy-Fair was the best.
If we can learn to close out a season like Cy-Fair does, we'll be in good shape," Cy Creek coach Natalie Allen said. My girls are focused on peaking at the right time and trying to capture a district championship."
The Lady Cougars came up short against Cy-Fair in district (29-53) in 2009, and even though both finished well ahead of third place Cy Ranch (109) and the rest of the district, it might be a different story this season.
Cy Ranch has a great coach in Greg Hersham, and they'll have a senior class this year," Allen said, and there's outstanding coaches at Cy Woods in Greg Zarate and at Cy Falls in Erica Welter, and Jersey Village and Langham Creek are going to be good, too.
The points may be a little more spread out in district this fall."
Cy Creek brings back a wealth of talent and it starts with junior Leslie Schilsky, the defending individual district champion who was eighth at regionals and 34th at state.
Sophomor Haley Deakins, in her first season of cross country, came in ninth at district and 24th at regionals.
She's a basketball player who had never run before, a true rookie, and she really came through," Allen said, and she's going to step up even more this year."
Junior Cody Ford placed 11th in district and is coming back with renewed focus, according to Allen, who also looks for improvement from sophomore lettermen Kelly Robinson (11th at district) and Sara Butcher (27th).
We have a couple of spots to fill, and I don't know who will step up," Allen said. We had more freshmen out last year (15) than I've ever seen, and they're an eager and determined group."
Cy Creek and the rest of District 17-5A has moved from Region II to Region III, and with Kingwood realigned into Region II, the race is wide open.
It's going be like tossing a deck of cards in the air and seeing where everything lands," Allen said. There are a number of outstanding teams in Region III like Cy-Fair and Clear Lake, but it's going to be really exciting to see who comes out and advances to state."
The Lady Cougars opened the season at the Klein practice meet this past Friday at Burroughs Park in Tomball, with the Cy-Fair Relays up next this Saturday at Rushing Park.
