AAUW Educational Foundation awards grants to local schools

The North Harris County Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) recently held its annual Educational Foundation awards dinner at the La Parranda restaurant.

Thousands of dollars were given to the Community Grant Recipients of 2011.

The recipients were the Barbara Bush Library, for supporting early childhood learning; Boys and Girls Country for playing catch-Up with kids; Cypress Creek Christian Community Center for the Northwest Houston Arts Alliance summer children’s series; Cy-Fair ISD-Campbell Middle School for the Campbell Flute Project; Cy-Fair High School for the Teachers Entering Neighborhoods for Student Success project; the Humble Education Foundation for using education to promote equity for Humble ISD's immigrant women; Klein Forest High School of Klein ISD and Cy-Falls and Cy-Lakes High Schools of the Cy-Fair ISD for the Sophomore Summits projects, and Yeager Elementary School for the Fit Girls project.

The AAUW North Harris County Branch also gives scholarships to Lone Star Junior College and has given a Community Action grant to Celeste Franklin for the Powered Up! Anti-Bullying Program. The Virginia R. Lyon American Fellowship Selected Professions (2010-11) was awarded to Cindy Smith, who is focusing on her Master of Architecture degree.
