Cy-Fair Roundup: Cy Falls, Cy Creek at Terry tourney

Cy Creek and Cy Falls are scheduled to be part of the Terry 7-on-7 State Qualifying Tournament that begins with pool play at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 4, in Rosenberg.

Cy Creek is in pool D with Clements, Victoria West and Willis, and Cy Falls, which won the Cy Creek SQT last week to earn a state berth, will not advance out of Pool C after facing Elkins, Katy and Memorial (teams with state berth don't go beyond pool play).

The Terry event also has the host Rangers, Bellaire, Fort Bend Austin and Texas City in Pool B, and Bush, Cinco Ranch, Dobie and A&M Consolidated in Pool B.

"The Terry tournament is part of our full 7-on-7 schedule," Cy Creek coach Greg McCaig said. "We've participated in the Houston Texans and our own tournament, and after Terry, we're at The Woodlands on June 11, Cy Falls on June 18 and Cinco Ranch on June 25.

"It's a great chance to get a good look at a lot of players, and for them to go up against outside competition during the summer, as well as going for a trip to state," McCaig said.

The 7-on-7 State Tournament is July 15-16 at Texas A&M University at College Station.

Cy Creek went up against Clear Creek, The Woodlands and Langham Creek at the Texans SQT on May 22, and faced A&M Consolidated, Terry and Cinco Ranch last week at home, but has not advanced out of pool play.

Pool winners move into the championship semifinals of SQTs where a victory earns a state berth.

The Terry semifinals are at 1 p.m. with the championship and consolation games at 2 p.m.

Cy Falls downed Jersey Village 46-33 in the Cy Creek finals, and Lamar stopped Montgomery 32-12 in the Manvel SQT finals last week.

Langham Creek baseball

Matt Rein, a 2007 Langham Creek graduate and Coastal Carolina University starting left-hander, was recently named the 2011 Big South Conference Pitcher of the Year.

Rein, who played his senior season for the Lobos and Langham Creek coach Armando Sedeño in 2007, transformed from a bullpen regular to weekend starter this spring, and the southpaw produced a conference-best 1.38 earned run average to go along with an 8-2 record and sparkling .195 opponents' batting average covering eight starts and 16 appearances.

Cy Creek volleyball

Cy Creek volleyball senior-to-be Evan St. Laurent recently committed to the University of Mississippi after starting the past two seasons for the Lady Cougars and coach Deborah Jaehne.

St. Laurent, a 5-7 setter, libero and defensive specialist, was named first team All-District 17-5A and led the league in digs with 7.1 per game in 2010, and she also owns a 3.78 grade point average in the classroom.

Region II-5A final set

Klein Oak and Klein baseball fans were pulling for each other last week, but that's not happening this week when the District 17-5A rivals square off in the Region II-5A finals.

A state berth is up for grabs during the best-of-three series at the University of Houston with Game One at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 2, Game Two at 2 p.m. Friday, June 3, and if needed, Game Three follows Game Two.

The teams have already met three times this spring with Klein Oak winning 13-3 at Klein on March 26, and Klein winning 3-1 at Klein Oak on April 19, during league action. After tying for the 17-5A title, the co-champs had a one-game playoff for the district's top seed and Klein Oak took a 9-7 home victory on April 30.
