LSC-CyFair offers foreign language credits for ASL classes

Lone Star College-CyFair's (LSC-CyFair) American Sign Language (ASL) courses are being offered for foreign language credit.

LSC-CyFair offers ASL year-round in a variety of formats such as full semester courses, 14-week or 8-week courses, and day or evening courses. In addition, Introduction to Deaf Community, Deaf Culture and Introduction to the Interpreting Profession courses can be taken online.

Additionally, the Interpreter Training Program (ITP) introduces students to skills necessary to achieve message equivalency in interpreting and transliterating to and from ASL. The program also includes the use of computer laboratories, multimedia equipment and video equipment to assess and enhance interpretation development.

“Due to the visual nature of ASL, it is a great alternative to the spoken foreign language classes,” said Leyel Hudson, LSC-CyFair associate professor and interpreter. “Some people take ASL just to transfer language credits, but we also offer an ASL Communication Skills Certificate to help enhance people’s resumes as well as an AAS degree in Interpreter Training Technology for those interested in pursuing an interpreting career.”
