Football: Area teams eyeing berths
Cy-Fair and Cy Creek will try to join what is quickly becoming a crowded state tournament field during this week's The Woodlands 7-on-7 State Qualifying Tournament.
The 16-team lineup at The Woodlands features three teams — Klein Forest, Klein Oak and Cinco Ranch - that have already stamped state tickets and will not advance out of pool play.
Along with the host Highlanders, Bellaire, Conroe, Klein, Klein Collins, Oak Ridge, Kingwood Park, Westfield, Hightower, Tomball and Willis will go for the two state berths up for grabs at The Woodlands on Saturday, June 11.
Cy Woods would love to end up in the championship game and grab a state berth on Saturday, June 11, at the A&M Consolidated SQT in College Station.
"The guys will get it their best shot," Cy Woods coach David Jones said. "We only have one other chance at Cy Falls (on June 18), so it would be nice to take care of it this week."
Hoping to prevent that from happening are Bryan, Austin Anderson, Brenham, Beeville, Lufkin, Red Oak, Bryan Rutter, Tyler Lee, Montgomery and host A&M Consolidated. While Cy Falls, which is also set to compete, has already nailed down a trip to state.
It's a busy Saturday, June 11, for SQTs with events also planned in Texas City, Belton, Colleyville, El Paso, Mesquite and Plano.
In Texas City, the Stingarees welcome Clear Lake, Bay City, Gregory-Portland, Chavez, Dobie, Pearland, Terry, Clear Springs, Port Arthur Memorial, Baytown Sterling, Alvin, Friendswood, La Porte, Little Cypress-Mauriceville and Goose Creek Memorial.
All SQTs begin with pool games at 9, 10 and 11 a.m., followed by pool winners in the semifinals at 1 p.m., and the championship and consolation games at 2 p.m.
Manvel and Dawson have been disqualified for the rest of the State7on7.com summer season after fighting during the Manvel SQT on May 28. Manvel had earned a state berth during the Houston Texans SQT on May 22, but that spot is now filled by Klein Oak.
Jersey Village, Langham Creek, Channelview, La Marque, Lamar, Montgomery and Elkins have also secured state tournament spots.
"The players are excited about having the (state) berth in hand," Jersey Village coach David Snokhous said. "They're looking forward to going to Texas A&M next month."
Jersey Village qualified at the Cy Creek SQT on May 28, and Langham Creek at the Texans SQT on May 22.
The 7-on-7 state tournament is July 15-16 at Texas A&M University in College Station.
