Spartans set to start

Cy Lakes picked a potent opponent for its first-ever varsity football game in Klein Collins, which is coming off a 12-1 season that included a district championship and berth in the Class 5A Division II region semifinals.
Even though it's Cy Lakes' first varsity campaign, many think the Spartans have enough firepower to challenge for a playoff berth in 17-5A, and Klein Collins is picked to repeat in 13-5A.

Cy Lakes: The Spartans are under the direction of coach Robert Blackshear, who knows the district extremely well after spending 11 seasons at Cy Springs. Blackshear brought offensive coordinator Kelly Klare and defensive coordinator Demond Hicks with him from Cy Springs to help create the program at Cy Lakes ... Like everyone in 17-5A, Cy Lakes has only one predistrict game before jumping into league play against Cy-Fair at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 (a Saturday) at Pridgeon Stadium ... Cy Lakes junior varsity teams went 8-1 and 6-2 last season ... Bowen was a junior varsity starter at quarterback last season who could be pushed by Cates, according to coaches, and Davis is a wide out who could move to quarterback in certain situations.
Klein Collins: After not even making the playoffs in 2008, the Tigers went undefeated (7-0) in District 13-5A last season, and then beat Oak Ridge 44-7 and Leander 28-17 in the postseason before being eliminated in the third round by Tyler John Tyler 37-24 and finish at 12-1 ... Klein Collins is also looking at three signal callers in Geisler, Haynes and Stehling. Geisler did not play football last season after leading a Klein Collins freshmen team to a district title in 2008, Haynes is a move in from Washington state, and Stehling split time at wide receiver with Jake Thompson while serving as the varsity backup quarterback in 2009 ... Greenlea and Eaves are part of an experienced offensive front with Scott Whitmore and Colin McCage ... The Tigers host Willowridge in their next game at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10 at Klein Memorial.
