Football: Four head to state final
Cy-Fair is in a near all-Houston area pool in the 7-on-7 Division I state bracket, but no matter the opponents, senior wide out Kaleb Moore is happy about the Bobcats just being there.
"The streak is still alive (now 12 state berths in a row), and I also know no matter who we play, they're going to be good," he said, "and after a couple of weeks of practices, we're looking forward to the challenge."
The 14th annual 7-on-7 State Tournament runs Thursday through Saturday, July 14-16, at Texas A&M University in College Station with Division II teams (Class 3A, 2A, A) going at it the first two days, and Division I (5A and 4A) playing Friday and Saturday.
Cy-Fair is in Pool O with Chavez, A&M Consolidated and Dallas Jesuit, and it's the only pool that has three area squads (counting A&M Consolidated). The Bobcats meet Dallas Jesuit at 2 p.m., A&M Consolidated at 4 p.m. and Chavez at 6 p.m. on Friday with all pool games at Penberthy Intramural Fields.
Langham Creek, Jersey Village and Cy Falls also represent District 17-5A at the event, and all three are also in pool action on Friday.
In Pool M, Langham Creek faces Klein Forest at 2 p.m., Rockwall at 4 p.m. and El Paso Riverside at 6 p.m., and it's the Lobos' sixth trip to state (five straight from 2005-09 and this year).
"We didn't like missing out last season, and we're excited to be back at state," Langham Creek junior quarterback and returning starter Connor Feist said.
In Pool N, Jersey Village meets Round Rock McNeil at 2 p.m., Arlington at 4 p.m. and Heath at 6 p.m. with hopes of advancing into the championship bracket on Saturday, July 16.
The same goes for Cy Falls, which will try to get out of Pool F against Fort Worth Paschal at 1 p.m., Weslaco at 3 p.m. and Willis at 5 p.m. Friday, July 15.
It's the second state appearance for Jersey Village (also in 2009), and the 10th for Cy Falls (others in 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010).
Cy Falls features senior returning starter Troy Mitchell at quarterback, and Jersey Village has senior Clay Magnuson under center.
Austin Lake Travis defeated DeSoto 42-39 in last year's 7-on-7 Division I championship game, and Lufkin held off The Woodlands 50-39 in the consolation finals.
Elkins is in Pool K with defending champ Lake Travis, Hebron and Frenship, and Lamar and Montgomery join DeSoto and Buda Hays Consolidated in Pool J.
Other pools with multiple area schools are Klein Collins and Terry in Pool P; Klein Oak and La Marque in Pool E; Tomball and West Brook in Pool H; and Cinco Ranch and Dobie in Pool C.
The Division I state championship game is at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 16, at Kyle Field, and the Division II title game for Class 3A, 2A and A schools is at 2:15 p.m. Friday, July 15, at Kyle Field.
