League City entrepreneur takes her flamingos north
The League City-based founder of Flamingos 2 Go will now be able to bring her eccentric pink decorations to yards in the northern parts of the Houston area.
Chris Ann Dale's company has offered rental packages of pink yard flamingos and other decorations for 12 years, helping people mark birthdays and other occasions in the Clear Lake, Pasadena, Bellaire, and West University areas. Dale has announced that she's setting up a satellite office to serve customers in Spring, Tomball, Cypress, Conroe, Magnolia and The Woodlands.
"Prior to Hurricane Ike, I had four locations: League City, Katy, Galleria and Bellaire, and Spring and The Woodlands," Dale says. "Ike and the economy forced the other locations to shut down."
She says her most unusual order recently was filling a tub with floating pink flamingo duckies for a funeral.
"I did pause, but the client explained how much the deceased lady had truly loved pink flamingos and would have really enjoyed them there," Dale says.
She says that before Ike, she handled an average of 400 rental orders per year, everything from do-it-yourself flamingo rentals to more elaborate yard displays. Since Ike, the orders have gone down to about 250 per year, but Dale says it's picking back up.
"I think people are having to get creative on how to make a living in our new economy," she says. "My business has been here for 12 years, but I have had more interest in potential entrepreneurs waiting to start a territory in the past year than ever before."
Dale adds that she'd also like to bring on satellite managers to help her reach Sugar Land and Katy.
These partners are not technically franchisees, she says, but independent distributors who pay Dale for the rights to run one of her branches.
"I supply the specialized skills, knowledge, inventory and many of the leads," Dale says. "They supply the drive, willingness to be coached and the sweat."
