Pro Baseball: Jersey Village grad Mandel tops Bison
Jersey Village High School graduate and Syracuse Chiefs hurler Jeff Mandel tossed a shutout inning July 19 to aid a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Bisons. In 28 appearances with the Nationals AAA club, the right-handed reliever has compiled a record of 3-3 with 2 saves and 31 strikeouts.
Mandel graduated from Jersey Village High School in 2003 before playing four seasons (2004 to 2007) with Baylor University. Mandel logged a career mark of 14-11 and eight saves with the Bears in 72 appearances, 25 of which were starts. Mandel had a career college ERA of 3.78 and fanned 151 hitters.
Following his senior season, Mandel was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 19th round (580th overall) of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. He was born April 30, 1985, in Houston.
