Cy-Fair roundup: Bobcats at home on the road
With construction continuing at Cy-Fair High School, the Lady Bobcats have been forced to begin the volleyball season at the Texas Tornados' club training facility.
"We were hoping to be back in our gym by Aug. 12, but it may be Aug. 19, and we're very fortunate that the Tornados have been willing to work with us," Cy-Fair coach Donna Benotti said.
"It's been fabulous to have our tryouts and early practices at such a great facility, and we'll also play our first two homes matches there, but it will be nice to get back home."
The Tornado facility is located just off Barker Cypress Road near the Berry Center (exact address is 8835 Wheat Cross Dr.), and it's just over seven miles from Cy-Fair High school.
The Lady Bobcats, who finished second in District 17-5A last season and advanced to the Region III semifinals, host Cinco Ranch in the season opener at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, and also welcome Katy at 6 p.m. on Aug. 12 at the Tornados' facility.
Most of the other 17-5A teams start the volleyball season on Tuesday, Aug. 9, with Jersey Village at Katy Taylor and Eisenhower at Cy Springs at 5:30 p.m.; Fort Bend Travis at Cy Woods, Westside at Cy Creek, and Katy at Langham Creek at 6 p.m.; and Clear Springs at Cy Ranch at 6:30 p.m.
There's two more openers on Wednesday, Aug. 10, including Mayde Creek at Cy Lakes at 6 p.m., and Cy Ridge at Westfield at 6:30 p.m.
"It's always hectic during the first week because you want to give everyone a chance to make the varsity, and you also have to get your varsity ready for the first match in just over a week," Benotti said, "and even though we've had to do it away from home, the folks at Texas Tornados have been great."
Cy-Fair ISD Volleyball Tournament just a week away
Less than 48 hours after the season openers, the Cy-Fair ISD Volleyball Tournament gets underway, and the two-day event on Aug. 11 and 13 has an impressive lineup.
"It's going to be a very good event with The Woodlands, Cy Woods, Cy Falls, our team, Klein Oak and Klein Collins in the field, and most of those teams went deep in the playoffs in 2010," Cy-Fair's Donna Benotti said. "Teams will be able to get several matches in against some of the top programs in the area and state, and that's just what most coaches want at this time of the season."
The Woodlands (Region II champ) and Cy Woods (Region III winner) advanced to the state tournament last season.
New coaches debut
Next week's volleyball openers also feature new head coaches at three Cy-Fair ISD schools.
Cy Ranch's Arley Kocher and Cy Creek's Tami Combs have their first matches on Tuesday, Aug. 9, while Cy Lake's Monica Martinez has to wait until Wednesday, Aug. 10, to make her debut.
Kocher is the daughter of Cy-Fair football coach Ed Pustejovsky.
