Area YMCAs collecting new backpacks
The seventh annual YMCA Operation Backpack will collect brand-new backpacks filled with school supplies for children in 31 Houston area school districts through Aug. 14.
The 40 YMCA of Greater Houston facilities throughout the city, as well as all Shoe Carnival and H-E-B locations will serve as collection sites for people to drop off backpacks and supplies.
"We serve as many families as we can," said Catherine Hollis, community relations director at the Langham Creek Family YMCA.
Last year, the Langham Creek YMCA was able to help about half the people on its list, she said, adding that it targets all students in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District.
People can purchase a new backpack filled with school supplies or buy school supplies for the backpack. People also can make an online donation to Operation Backpack.
