Cy Falls High grad takes part in historic Navy exercise
Cy Falls High School grad Megan Walker was part of the first all-female arresting gear crew.
Walker was part of a seven-women team on the USS George H.W. Bush, the first in navy history. The crew began at 9 a.m. with the successful landing of their first plane, an F/A 18E Super Hornet. During their 14-hour day, the women helped 70 aircraft land safely aboard the ship and had to work together to replace a 125-pound arresting wire.
The crew came together thanks to the effort of Topside Petty Officer Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Equipment) 3rd Class (AW/SW) Beatrice A. Williamson. Of the more than 200 sailors on the ship, only 10 women were assigned to arresting gear work. Williams worked hard to get women certified for the work and create the crew, of which Walker was a part.
