Red light cameras prevent accidents, says police chief
While the city of Houston has reversed direction several times on its red-light camera program due to legal challenges, in nearby Jersey Village a similar program is seen as effective traffic enforcement by the police chief. The red-light camera money, after all program expenses are paid, can be used for pedestrian and public safety programs, traffic enforcement and intersection improvements. According to city documents, accidents at major intersections totaled 179 between Jan. 1, 2007 and June 27, 2008 compared to 86 collisions between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009.
