Match-up more than a game
The Cy-Fair community is coming together for another year to support the Coach to Cure MD, a fundraiser to fight Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disorder that primarily affects boys. Lamkin Elementary second-grader Nicholas Bullers, 8, has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, while classmate Wyatt Keenan, 8, has Becker muscular dystrophy, described as a milder form of Duchenne, according to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The campaign to raise awareness and funds has made tremendous strides since her son's diagnosis at the age of 3, she said. The steroids cause brittle bones so we have to be careful with his diet because of the sodium and possible weight gain. Boys are typically diagnosed around the age of 4 due to a waddling gait, enlarged calf muscles and running delays. Pat Furlong, founding president and CEO of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, said the college and high school level support from football teams will allow the organization to reach higher goals.
