Group strives to keep Cy-Fair parents involved

For 20 years, the Cy-Fair Minority Parents Association has been striving to keep parents and the Cy-Fair ISD on the same track when it comes to providing the ultimate education experience for area students. The association is a nonprofit corporation that was formed initially by African-American parents who wanted to take an active role in their children's education. The group has awarded more than $75,000 in scholarships, increased the hiring of minority teachers and administrators, raised the number of minority students attending four-year colleges/universities and encouraged students to take honors and Advanced Placement courses. George and DeBra Edwards, treasurer and secretary respectively, said they work hand-in-hand with president Adolphus Moore and district officials to reach out to the community. DeBra Edwards said their outreach is informative on many levels for parents. Since the organization began in 1991, the demographics of the district have changed, especially when it comes to disadvantaged students, she said.
